Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to lead one of my high school buddies, Jim VanVleet and his friend Eddie up the Upper Exum Ridge of the Grand Teton for his first mountaineering/alpine rock climbing experience. We lucked out with a short weather window that allowed us to climb in the sun with minimal winds and no lightning. Every other day we were there had thunderstorms. Sadly, a woman died on the same route the next day while being guided by a professional outfit. Goes to show that you can never be too careful in the mountains, even when climbing well established, popular routes.
